The Department of Economics is one of the oldest departments in the college and it was started with the inception of the institution since 1970. It was recognized as postgraduate center by Pune University and became research center for M.Phil. in 2007-08 and PhD in 2012-13. The department is credited with more than hundred research works (PhD Thesis and MPhil Dissertations) on the Golden Jubilee year, 2020. Presently, this Department is bearing responsibility of teaching of more than twenty-five hundred students of Economics (BA, MA), Commerce (B.Com, M.Com.) and Management (BBA) streams with highly educated and qualified teaching staffs. Apart from these courses, teaching staffs also care about MPhil and PhD students registered at the center. Moreover, this research center has contributed in research publications in big volumes and provides opportunities to teachers and researchers from all parts of India and abroad by organizing conferences/seminars/workshops and editing books and journals.
Goals
- To make the students a human-being with high human values and teach them that this subject, Economics can serve the society by eliminating poverty, providing employment
- To equip the students with quantitative skills required by the research industry and other government bodies to enhance their employability.

Objectives
- To develop a multi-disciplinary approach and inculcate a sense of appreciation for different disciplines and branches in Economics through teaching and learning process.
- To upgrade curriculum by including socially relevant, market-oriented and environment centric papers.
- Recognition of human-being as a center of all economic activities
- To create a passion for the concepts and practical significance of Economics.
- To ensure the socio-economic empowerment of all sections of the society; particularly, women, dalits and minority in the context of social justice.

Department of Economics is a well-known Research Centre under the jurisdiction of Savitribai Phule Pune University and it is also popular among the students of other parts of India, particularly in north and north-eastern part of India. It was recognized as postgraduate Centre by Pune University and became research Centre for M.Phil. and Ph.D. in the year 2007-08 and 2012-13 respectively. The department is credited with more than hundred research works (PhD Thesis and MPhil Dissertations) till 2020, the Golden Jubilee year of the college. Moreover, our Research Centre has contributed in research publications in big volumes and provided opportunities to teachers and researchers from all parts of India and abroad by organizing conferences/seminars/workshops and by editing books and journals. Our Centre is guiding the scholars and academicians to take the burning problems of the society in their research endeavors since its inception. Researchers had submitted their manuscripts on the burning topics of the society and economy of their times viz. industry, agriculture, service sector, human development, poverty, child labor, women’s issue, banking, public finance, trade, globalization, privatization, liberalization, etc.
