Department of Geology

The Department of Geology of Poona College was established in the year June 1978.  Geology laboratory is well equipped with geological instruments and possesses a good collection of minerals, rock specimens, crystals models, fossil specimens and microscopes. The departmental library has good collection of books and research journals with more than 500 booksin our central library of various branches of earth sciences. In a span of about 42 years the department has imparted teaching not only to Indian students but also many NRIs and international students coming from Iran, Palestine, Jordan, Ethiopia, Sudan, Sri Lanka, Mauritius, etc. Many of our past students are professionally well placed in various geological organizations all over the globe. The staff members actively participate in various state, national, international conferences/seminars/workshops and have undertaken minor and major research projects funded by U.G.C. The Department has close liaison with geological and research institutes such on Geological Survey of India Deccan College Agharkar Research Institute, National Geophysical Research Institute, Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, etc. The faculty from our department has presented their research papers in prestigious international events like International geological congress, Goldschmidt conferences, AOGS, INQUA Congress, Planet Under Pressure Conference, which were held in countries like as Italy, Germany, Norway, Switzerland, Singapore, U.K, Canada, Australia, Russia, etc. Dr. M. R. G. Sayyed has successfully convened many sessions in international conferences abroad. The faculty of the department is regularly publishing research papers in national and international journal.

Goals & Objectives

  • Create the facilities and environment in the college to introduce and consolidate the knowledge acquired at +2 level and to motivate and inspire the students to create deep interest in Geology, to develop broad and balanced knowledge and understanding of geological concepts, principles and theories of stratigraphy, geological mapping, exploration of natural resources and understand Earth evolution.
  • Learn, design and perform experiments in the labs to demonstrate the concepts, principles and theories learned in the classrooms.
  • Develop the ability to apply the knowledge acquired in the classroom and laboratories to specific problems in theoretical and applied Geology.
  • Expose the student to the vast scope of Geosciences as a theoretical and experimental science with applications in solving most of the geogenic problems in nature spanning from disaster management, watershed management, water pollution, oil exploration and mining, etc.
  • Emphasize the need for integrating Geosciences as one of the most important branch of science for pursuing the interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary higher education and/or research in interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary areas.
  • To emphasize the importance of Geology as the most important discipline for sustaining the existing industries and establishing new ones to create job opportunities at all levels of employment.
  • In view of opening the new windows in higher education and research and opening job opportunities at all levels from technicians to innovator scientists and engineers, two undergraduate programs are offered in our universities and other higher education institutions(HEI) at the entry level of our higher education system.
