Department of Sociology

Since its inception 1970 the department of sociology has been one of the most active and dynamic department of Poona College of Arts, Science and Commerce. The department has organized various seminars, symposiums, workshops on women’s empowerment, National integration, Disaster Management, Student Workshop on Nirbhay Kanya Abhiyan, International workshop on Child Rights and Child Protection, International workshop on International Brotherhood and Universal Human Values, International workshop on Work, Organization and Markets in Global Current Concern, International Workshop on Cultural and Social Analysis of Global Societies, Expert Lecture on Gender Equality and Mindset of Indian Society and Expert Lecture on Global Civic Society and Cyber Security . Seminars on Sociology of gender, Role of Youth in Swachcha Bharat Abhiyan, International Conference on Sustainable Development Goals and Changing World Order and also World Heritage and World Culture. Department has also run some Certificate Courses and student centric activates in the college. Over the years the Department has evolved to define sociology in different ways keeping in tune with the regional, national and international developments. The Department believes in providing leadership in defining the curriculum of Sociology in students.

Goals

  • Understand the discipline of sociology and its role in contributing to an understanding of social reality.
  • Be able to think critically.
  • Understand diversity and inequality (e.g., race, class, and gender) in the India and the global context, as well as their relationship to social justice.
  • Understand the role of evidence and empirical methods in sociological thinking.
  • Understand the importance of using sociological knowledge to inform policy debates and promote public understanding.

Objectives

  • To introduce students to the basic social processes of society, social institutions and patterns of social behavior.
  • To train students to understand and to interpret objectively the role of social processes, social institutions and social interactions in their lives.
  • Effective connection of key concepts/processes employed to explain social phenomena.
  • Correct understanding via clear description/definition of key concepts.
  • To teach students the concepts, theories, and methods of the behavioral and social services.
